Born to West lndian parents in Nottingham, England, on 29 July 1956, Vivian Alexander Anderson became the first black football player to represent England in international competition when he made his debut against Czechoslovakia in 1978. During a long and stellar career, he led many English clubs to league and division championships. He played for Nottingham Forest, Arsenal, Manchester United, Sheffield Wednesday, Barnsley and Middlesbrough between 1974 and 1995. He managed Barnsley briefly before serving as an assistant to Bryan Robson at Middlesborough until his retirement in 2001. He was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame in 2004. Anderson was also awarded an MBE by the British Government for his services to football.
