Dr Murchison G. Callender, who taught optometry at the University of Wlaterloo for almost thirty years, was elevated to the rank of Professor Emeritus when he retired in l996. Born in Trinidad, he came to Canada as a student in l958 and earned the degrees of BSc from Concordia University and MSc from the University of Waterloo. He completed his doctorate in optometry at Birmingham University in England. He published several seminal papers on the physiology of the eye in contact with lens wear and has become acknowledged internationally as an expert in this field. He thus serves as a consultant to many manufacturers and medical associations on matters pertaining to contact lenses. Dr Callender has remained very actively involved in research, clinical teaching and vision care programmes in the Caribbean.
