CAMPBELL, Clifford

Sir Clifford Clarence Campbell, who became the first black Governor General of Jamaica when that island achieved its political independence in 1962, was born on 28 June 1892. After leaving Petersfield School, he attended Mico Training College, became a teacher, and then served as headmaster of several schools before entering politics. As a prominent member of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), he was first elected to the national House of Representatives in 1944 and was appointed speaker of that legislature in 1950. Campbell later served as President of the Senate. Knighted in 1963, Sir Clifford finally resigned from the governorship of Jamaica in 1973.  He died on 28 September 1991 at the great age of 99.
