Sir James Beethoven Carlisle has been the Governor General of Antigua and Barbuda since 10 June 1993. He was born in the village of Bolans, Antigua, on 5 August 1937 and attended Bolans Public School before continuing his studies at Northampton College of Technology in England and achieving a degree in dentistry from the University of Dundee in Scotland. While in the United Kingdom, he served in the Royal Air Force during 1961-66 and was later commissioned in the Royal Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force. In 1991, he graduated from the American School of Laser Dentistry Sir James practised in Antigua and England and became actively involved in such organisations as the Medical Board and the Antigua and Barbuda Dental Association. He joined the International Society of Laser Dentists and the British Dental Association. He also developed a fluoride programme for children, gave dental lectures, and instituted a free dental service for seniors and children. He was named a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and awarded an honorary doctorate by the Andrews University in Michigan. Sir James was elevated to a knighthood in 1993 and admitted to the Royal Order of the Intare of Rwanda.
