MOODY, Harold Ernest

Harold Ernest Moody, 1915-1986

Doctor, Army Medical Officer during the Second World War,

Olympic and Commonwealth Athlete, Mayor of the city of Auckland in New Zealand.

 

He qualified as a doctor in 1941, serving as a commissioned officer and army doctor on troop ships in many theatres of war. He was posted to India before returning to the family’s GP practice in Peckham.

 

In 1948 he represented Britain in the shot-put and discus at the Olympic Games, held at Wembley Stadium. He went on to win gold medals for these events at the 1950 Empire Games.

 

He settled in New Zealand in 1951, where he became a popular and active member of the Auckland community, serving as Mayor from 1967 to 1971.
